What is web content filtering

It is primarily a very high speed, low overhead URL filter and time quota manager but also includes other functionality such as a cache pre-loader where you can refresh your cache at quite times in order to improve hit rates during peak times. The purpose of content management is to enhance the security of web browsing whilst at the same time giving you the ability to enforce your company internet usage policy. This is achieved by maintaining databases of banned or suspect domains and URL's and to match user requests, in real-time, in order to decide whether to allow access.

In addition URL's can be scanned for matching patterns of any type by a high-speed regular expression engine. Matches can result in locking, allowing or redirecting any user request. User lists can be maintained by any group type - Branch, Region, Department, Customer, etc. and a single user may exist in multiple groups. Groups can be activated by time-of-day, day-of-week or any combination thereof. Internet access quota's can also be maintained by group with quotas of allowed browsing time by hour, day or week. These quotas can also be activated or deactivated by time-of-day, day-of-week or any combination thereof.

A high speed, real-time virus scanning engine that scans any identifiable download prior to caching results in a high level of security and fully implements scan once read many technologies. SQL logging of each request blocked, each virus found and all quota results allows exceptional management reporting and statistics. A cache pre-loader is an extra feature where a URL list and/or an automatically maintained TOP sites list is pre-fetched into Cache at a preset quite time of day so that the data is fresh and available during working hours.
